When Going Viral Sucks!

Updated: Jan 19, 2023

If you’re reading this, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve thought about starting your own business or maybe you even have your own business. There’s also a good chance you’ve dreamt about your business going viral, but have you ever thought about what happens after you go viral?

Well SMA’s latest accomplished presenter, Max Ringelheim, doesn’t have to dream about that, because he lived it! Max shared his roller coaster story with the SMA community last week as he spoke about how he Co-founded the Hoverboard with his business partners through their viral brand, PhunkeeDuck.

As you might imagine, PhunkeeDuck reached the highest of highs when Kendall Jenner (yes, THAT Kendall Jenner) reached out about wanting a hoverboard to ride and posted this video on her social media, and former New York Knicks basketball player, J.R. Smith was seen riding his hoverboard into an NBA Finals Game.

The calls and orders for the hoverboard started pouring in and life is good…right?

Think again.

It seemed like right when they hit it big one thing after another went wrong for Max and his partners as they didn’t have enough inventory to meet the demand, their customers experienced delayed delivery dates, and they saw an increase in copycat hoverboards.

Throughout the rest of this highly interactive webinar, Max allowed those in attendance to come up with potential solutions to the actual problems he and his team faced as the idea of going viral suddenly…sucked!

Unfortunately, there were more problems than Max and his partners were able to handle, but Max now uses this experience in a positive way as he continues to share his story with the business community to make them aware of all of the potential pitfalls that nobody ever thinks about when you go viral!

Everyone dreams big about going viral, but nobody dreams about the proper plan you have to have in place before, during, and after.

You’ve read this far, so what do you think? How do you think you would have handled all of the problems that Max and his brand experienced when they went viral?

Let us know what you think in the comments or reach out to us on social media!
