Communications and Alumni Coordinator









Position Summary:

Lead and manage department marketing and communications related to Undergraduate, Graduate, Alumni, and Department digital storytelling including social media communication, departmental website maintenance; development and execution of student, alumni, and community engagement programs and events including managing ACT Human Rights Film Festival marketing and communications; manage alumni engagement for the department; contribute communication expertise in service to College communications; supervise students supporting department communication activities.


Description of Work Unit:


Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities. The Department of Communication Studies at Colorado State University currently teaches more than 450 undergraduate majors, over 41 graduate students seeking either the MA or the PhD. The graduate program includes 16 M.A. candidates and 25 PhD students. We employ nearly 35 faculty members and six support staff. We manage a budget of $3.3 million with widely varying revenue streams. The department houses the Colorado State University Center for Public Deliberation (www.cpd.colostate.edu) and hosts the Act Human Rights Film Festival (www.actfilmest.org). ESSENTIAL DUTIES:


Digital Media & Marketing

Student Recruitment

  • In collaboration with the chair and directors of the graduate and undergraduate programs, develop and execute social media practices to make the department appealing to prospective and current undergraduate students, and prospective and current graduate students

  • Collaborate with CLA recruitment efforts and align department strategy with college vision

  • Department Relations

    • Create social media posts that feature faculty and student research, publications, and engagement

    • Write short features on undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and alumni

    • Collaborate with CSU News & Media Relations team to promote department news to the college and university level


Communications Execution

  • Develop and execute digital strategy across a range of platforms including the department’s webpage and social media accounts

  • Maintain faculty, staff, graduate student profiles on the website

  • Oversee the department’s digital monitor

  • Maintain department website including content generation and updating of visual design

  • Collaborate with chair and program directors to update and review General Catalog – department descriptions and course updates

  • Manage CMST marketing and outreach materials including giveaways; order/manage inventory; update tradeshow materials as needed

  • Maintain data and metrics to demonstrate the efficacy of social media efforts

  • Coordinate photo and video shoots; Take photography and produce video as needed

  • Special projects and/or other duties as assigned

College Strategic Communication Support

  • Provide stories for CLA Magazine, CLA Source, and other publications

  • Participate in College Communicator meetings, CLA requests for content (feature stories and other content related to special projects)

  • Collaborate with CLA digital media specialist on social campaigns

  • Assist with/provide content for undergraduate recruitment efforts as directed by College and the Office of Admissions

  • Collaborate with CLA Recruitment & Enrollment Coordinator on recruitment, enrollment, and yield efforts for the department, including emails, texting campaigns, phone calls, and visit days.

  • Track metrics on social media, website, and campaigns and provide to College for twice-yearly reporting

  • Special projects and/or other duties as assigned

Alumni Engagement

  • Work with CLA Development to cultivate relationships with alumni, emeriti faculty, and donors

  • Track and recommend updates for Department Online Giving Page to CLA Development

  • Strategically develop relationships with alumni through engaged storytelling and volunteer opportunities

  • Develop, plan, and implement alumni events and engagement for current undergraduate and graduate students, at local and national conferences, as well as in regional markets of interest

  • Partner with CSU Alumni Association to leverage CMST alumni stories and events

  • Create regular alumni-focused communication channels, whether e-newsletter, posting to LinkedIn, or social media.

  • In collaboration with the chair, create and execute social media practices that will appeal to alumni and donors and prospective and current departmental staff and faculty

  • Design and create content for the department annual alumni newsletter

  • Special projects and/or other duties as assigned

Center Marketing and External Communication Support

  • For both the ACT Human Rights Film Festival and the Center for Public Deliberation:

    • Oversee brand integration of Communication Studies and CSU with ACT and CPD

    • Feature centers’ storytelling, engagement, and impact in departmental and college communication

    • Provide support on marketing and social media outreach for center events

    • Oversee execution of marketing ACT to external publics

    • Oversee design and production of creative materials for ACT

    • Special projects and/or other duties as assigned


Supervision

  • Supervision and mentorship of interns and undergraduates on social media tasks

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Two years of specific experience in two of the following expertise areas: digital media content creation and strategy; marketing/advertising; public relations; alumni relations; event planning.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
